Baldaufs Vs. Genetics — Post-Holidays

We’re back for the first weigh-ins after the holidays. I did skip posting a weigh-in so I’ll do a quick re-cap. Before the holidays, our weights were: 215.4 lbs (Bob), 260 lbs (Dan), and 195 lbs (Me). Over the missed weigh-in, we all went up a little bit more.

Anyways, on to the new year of “Baldaufs vs. Genetics”. The questions for this week were:

  1. How’d the holidays go? What was the biggest struggle?
  2. Any plans for the new year?
  3. Any revisions of goals going forward here in terms of weight/etc.?

The Bob(father)

1. “The holidays were tough, food and sweets everywhere and I had time off from work to enjoy them.”

2. “I think if the first couple of weeks go well, I’ll stick with moderation and exercise, otherwise I may try Atkins again.”

3. “At this point I just want to get below 200. 190 might be impossible.”

The Dan (Uncle)

1. “Not too bad considering the holidays were all about eating! Leftover Crab legs and Prime rib from New Years are gone, some Salsa and Chips left to get rid of and no more sweats should set me in the right direction again. My biggest struggle for the holidays was more about not getting out and doing anything like walking, hunting, etc than it was about overeating. Actually I overdrank more than I overate. Diet coke and rum.”

2. “New year, for me, has to bring some changes as I am feeling like shit often. Need the freedom and energy level of before! I am eating healthy cereal for breakfast, mini sub or salad for lunch and a sensable dinner, which will also include a veggie only day as this intrigues me.”

3. “There is no set goal anymore, it is about making the right choices and trying my best to stick with it. When I feel good enough, I will continue..”

Starting Weight: 268.8 lbs
Current Weight: 261 lbs
Overall Change:  -2.90%

Me (Shane)

1. “The holidays didn’t go too bad. I did pretty good in terms of not overeating around Christmas but really kind of failed on that around New Years. My biggest struggle, besides not destroying all sweets in sight, was probably the lack of working out without a gym membership.”

2. “A talked about this a little bit in my post yesterday, but my main plan is to eat smaller portions, add a veggie meal once a week, and to force myself to work out at least 3 times a week.”

3. “My goal is to get at least around 185, maybe closer to 180 depending on how it goes.”

Current Weight: 196 lbs
Overall Change: +.51%

(Note: I would like to take this opportunity to mention the importance of having your scale on a level surface. My first weigh-in for this week read 191.6, which I greeted with shock and more than just a little joy at having thrown myself back near the lead. Unfortunately, my disbelief won out and my next weigh-in at a different spot read 194.6. After using my iphone level app, I came out at 196. Sad.)

Recap

Dan made out pretty good over the holidays, staying right around even, while Bob slid back to his starting point. My father and I have a lot of ground to make up on Dan now, but we are through the worst of it. As for me, I’m not too disappointed being at 196. I can definitely work off of that and didn’t gain too much over the holidays. It’s all about getting back into the swing of things now, so we’ll see who can do that the quickest.

Baldaufs Vs. Genetics: Pre-Thanksgiving

I am waaay behind right now in posts. This is a combination of my still-absent internet at home and busyness with Thanksgiving. (I miss the internet!! Come back to me, pleeeease.) So this was supposed to be up on Monday. Post-Thanksgiving, might be able to get back on track. But things might stay erratic until post-Christmas. Just to warn you.

So the big weigh-in!! Who will win the bottle of brandy?!? Let’s find out! Also for this week, we had two questions to answer:

  1. Any short-term changes for the last two weeks and how’d it go?
  2. Any plans for dealing with the holidays?

 

The Uncle (Dan)

1. “Hunting caused some short-term changes. Low carbs had gone okay, but hunting made it harder.”

2. “My plans for the holidays is moderation. It will suck, but I will watch my weight and know when it is time to quit and go clean for awhile. If I can come through Thanksgiving at 260 I will be happy, then focus on getting down to 245 my Christmas.”

The Bob (Dad)

1. I did not receive a response for the first question. Clearly, he cheated somehow then.

Me (Shane)

1. “My plan for the two weeks was to try to not graze as much and to work out pretty much every day. Went alright for the first week, but I didn’t quite make it every day. The second week didn’t go so well. I kind of thought I broke a bone in my foot (pretty sure I did not now), but it hurt enough that I didn’t want to run/bike. So that kind of set me back a little bit. Probably could have eaten less sweets as well. And I had to celebrate a little bit (because I got into med school!!!!).”

2. “My plan is to not let the holidays become a holiday month. I’m fine with overeating on Thanksgiving and Christmas, but that’s it. Outside of those days, it’s all about limiting myself.”

Starting Weight: 195 lbs
Last Weigh In: 193 lbs
Current Weight: 190.5 lbs
(This is an average. I had to use my terrible scale at home and it couldn’t distinguish between 190-191.)
Overall % Change:  -2.31 %

2-Week % Change: -1.28%

The Winner

1st: Bob  -1.52%
2nd: Me  -1.28%
3rd: Dan  -1.12%

So the Bob wins the bottle of brandy (which I forgot to leave money behind for. I can get it to you at Christmas if you want to just take care of it Dan). Meanwhile, Dan holds onto the overall lead with Bob close behind while I lag behind. The next month should really separate the contenders from the pretenders though. We’ll see who can make it through the holidays the best. And one last thing…

I finally have a photo! Since neither of them gave me, I was forced to sneak a couple during Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to get any pictures of them eating tons of food because I was too busy stuffing my own face at those times. The Bob is on the left and Dan is on the right. The Pros and Cons of Stress Eating

First of all, sorry for the missing post last Friday for the still-untitled third section of the blog. Still lacking internet. I might have to break down and start paying someone for internet again. Either that or hunt down who my landlords get (or more accurately don’t get) the internet through, and then call them every 5 minutes whenever I’m not working. The second idea is surprisingly tempting. Moving on…

This week’s food post is all about stress eating. I’m currently in that totally awesome period of time where I’m just waiting to hear back from the schools I’ve interviewed with and waiting to see if the last two schools I haven’t heard anything from will give me an interview. I also got my first rejection (from a school that I interview with). Not that much of a surprise, but the wait list would have been nice. So I’ve been bouncing back and forth from a general level of stress from waiting to a full blown WHAT THE HELL AM I GOING TO DO WITH MY LIFE!?!?! level. I’m sure most recent college grads or soon-to-be-grads can relate.

I generally deal with stress in a few ways:

  1. Extreme irritability–Much scowling and complaining here. I try to avoid it, but it happens. (My apologies to the Girlfriend)
  2. Sloth–Some people work out to deal with stress. Occasionally I do when the irritability builds up too much. But more frequently, I don’t do anything. As someone who is trying to lose weight, this usually doesn’t help things much (weight-wise or stress-wise)
  3. Eat–As long as I’m not working out, why not eat more! Because stress isn’t bad enough for one’s health on it’s own!
  4. Eat Some More–Especially sweets, resulting in a never-ending spiral of more sweets.

So, in order to convince myself more thoroughly why I should avoid stress eating, we’re going to make a pros and cons list.

Pro: Eating Makes Me Feel Better

When you’re stressed, why shouldn’t you do things that make you happy? I like eating. I can’t help it. (“It’s the genetics!” whispering in the back of my mind. Might want to get that checked out.) And it does make me feel better. Who doesn’t like cookies and milk? (I mean seriously Whole Foods, how many weeks can these cookies be on sale? You’re killing me!) I can feel the endorphins flooding my system with each bite until I hit an only slightly uncomfortable food coma.

Con: The Subsequent Self-Loathing

First, let’s be honest. I rarely stop at slightly uncomfortable and go full bore into an extremely uncomfortable food coma. Then I feel guilty about eating an entire row of cookies. Plus, I’m already not working out because of the sloth strategy so I only hate myself more. Things just keep spiraling more and more once I start stress eating.

Con: More Eating Out

An increased appetite. A crabby attitude towards cooking (see extreme irritability) and the dishes that go with it. Just wanting unhealthy food. It all adds up to ordering out more. Now I’m spending more money and eating less healthy than before.

Pro: More Eating Out

Tasty food. No dishes. No cooking. Doesn’t sound that bad actually. We’ll call it a wash for now. Ignoring the money part.

Pro: I Like Sweets

Cookies, brownies, chocolate bars (dark chocolate = healthy right!?)–I like them very much. They are delicious. No further arguments are needed.

Con: My Inability to Moderate Myself

Once a little bit of sugar enters my system, it creates an unquenchable need for sweets. It’s like a vacuum. I’m turned into a mindless, sugar-killing machine. When I was younger, I would eat an entire pan of cookie bars over the course of the day. Any time I went into the kitchen, I’d grab one or two. Eventually, I’d be making up reasons to go to the kitchen. I need something to drink. Oops, forgot my pen in the kitchen. Get back here you silly cat–oh hey, cookie bars! Then it would devolve into getting a brother to bring them back for me. Hey Aaron, I’ll give you a dollar if you bring me a cookie bar. Hey Kyle, get me a cookie bar and I might not punch you. Bam! All gone. (And Kyle probably punched.)

Things haven’t improved. You’d think without brothers to bribe or extort, it’d be a little better. But now I make the sweets. Which means I have the leftover batter or dough all to myself. Which might be worse, since I eat all the extras and then eat the cookies or brownies too. Plus the Girlfriend doesn’t put up nearly as much of a fight as my father in terms of quantity eaten. Which leads to…

Con: Increased Need to Work Out

All the bad eating and uncontrolled bingeing means, more working out. And another bad week in Baldaufs vs Genetics. As someone who doesn’t love working out, definitely a con.

Verdict: Stress Eating Is Bad

Okay, no real surprises here. But let’s be honest, this was mostly an exercise in convincing myself to stop eating so shitty. I really need to find a different stress hobby than eating. While stress eating is enjoyable and maybe even helpful in the short-term, it only creates more problem down the road. And while it is important to blow off steam once in awhile with a few cookies, an entire pan of brownies is probably a bad idea. So remember kids–Moderation!!

OSS Days 3-4 — Biking and Badger Games

Wednesday went well. Really well. Plans of running on every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday didn’t pan out with the girlfriend as she had to work, but we’re still working on a set routine. So I had to change things around a bit. I tried running with Olive, but I waited too long to go and she was a little to mellowed out for a run. So we switched it to a short walk and then I went for a bike ride.

I have always like riding my bike (especially know that I have my shitty road bike back) but I just haven’t ever gotten around to going for long rides for a workout. I made a rough plan of my ride and set off. And it was great. Much more enjoyable than running. I ended up doing a little over 7 miles, which turns out to be a little bit short for me. Still finding my limitations as I get back into working out. Next time I’ll probably shoot for 10 miles. It was a great route for a run, though, once I work up to that distance.

After the bike ride, I worked all evening. I successfully avoided all rogue fries (patting myself on the back) but I did give in at the end of my shift and at a few handfuls of popcorn. Post-work, dinner was half a steak and watermelon. One thing I’ve been trying to do is cut my meat portions in half for every meal. It wasn’t as bad as I expected. The sweets ban also survived through the first 3 days.

Thursday was a little bit off. I worked a very long/busy shift in the morning and afternoon as we got ready for the first Badger football game. It started off as a nightmare in terms of work, but things went quite well afterwards. However, the boss brought in donuts. This presented a dilemma. I would feel bad not eating one, as my boss went through the trouble of bringing them in. Additionally, when I worked for the football team the last five years, we would always have donuts on gameday, and I didn’t want to mess with a working system. Foolish justification? Absolutely. But I did limit myself to only one donut (and I was very hungry and needed a de-stressor), which was a minor achievement in itself. Avoided the rogue fries again and managed to avoid to popcorn, but that was partially due to how busy we were.

After work, I met up with a friend for a few drinks before the game and lucked into a couple of free tickets. That messed with the dinner plans, so the girlfriend and I grabbed a bite to eat at the stadium. One brat and half a pretzel (which was cold and a definite mistake) for dinner wasn’t too bad. After the game, we went out and I had a few more drinks. So overall on the day, I didn’t eat all that healthy (and drinking certainly isn’t going to help my cause) but I did manage to limit the amount that I ate. And I showed restraint in the face of sweets.

However, the sweets ban did only make it a meager 3 days. Which may or may not actually be an achievement. I have a terrible sweet tooth. This is representative of me and sweets. Also, I love Hyperbole and a Half. (Seriously, click on it. It’s amazing. DO IT.)

Operation Suit Squeeze — Day 2

First of all, Operation Suit Squeeze will be shortened to OSS from now on. I don’t want to write it out every time. Additionally, this is a long post. Sorry. Just some necessary background info in this one.

Day one was okay. Woke up, then played a little fetch and chase at the dog park with the labradile. Fetch and chase is our primitive version of fetch where Olive will go get the object, come back halfway, and then make me chase her. It’s a nice little mini-workout, but I look forward to just being able to throw a ball.

After the dog park, the girlfriend and I went for a run(!). I hate running. I’ve been avoiding it all summer. But I can’t go to the student facilities anymore (stupid graduation) and I don’t have money for a gym membership. So I’m kind of out of options. My hatred of running stems straight from my genetics. Baldaufs do not run. It’s a fact of life.

When I ran track in high school, this was brought up at many family outings. Turns out, I didn’t really run track so much either. One time, I lost a 100m dash by 15 meters. Another time, I ran 300m hurdles (my coach really didn’t know what to do with me) and I ended up doing the last 10 meters like a gorilla. Unintentionally of course. (For the record, I did make it to state for the 4×400 relay. As an alternate. I usually leave that part out). But us Baldaufs generally run like we’re hauling something behind us. Lot of motion, very little distance covered. Except my dad, whose sprint is really just an accelerated trot.

Additionally, I am allergic to running. Seriously. For reals. (It’s a serious problem, okay!?!) Every track season, I got sick. Any time I run, I phlegm up. For those of you with a weak stomach or about to eat, you might want to skip ahead a bit. I run, and my entire throat becomes clogged. I can’t breathe. I spend my entire run making that god-awful phlegm clearing noise (those of you who know phlegmy people know what I’m talking about). Needless to say, this really screws with my breathing.

Anyways, we ran almost 2 miles and walked the last mile. Not a great start, but it’s a work in progress. I was feeling pretty tight. Got home, ate a fried egg, ham, and cheese sandwich. And that was it for brunch. Ate a handful of walnuts and banana chips later in the day for a snack.

Dinner is where I ran into trouble, though. The girlfriend’s sister (and Shane vs Genetics follower Keighley–shoutout) was in town and there wasn’t time to cook dinner, so we went out. We ate at State Street Brats, where I work, and I ate WAY too much. Classic example of overeating. I’ll chalk it up as an exception due to the lack of time to cook dinner, but I do need to work on my eating habits when I eat out. I did hold out against ice cream, minus a couple of small bites from the girlfriend’s. So the ban on sweets is safe.

Day 2 sucked. A lot. I woke up, ate a yogurt, and went to work. Worst. Shift. Ever. People need to tip!!!! (Which is only a small fraction of the worst shift problems). I brought some trail mix stuff to snack on at work and some gum in an attempt to avoid grazing all day on the rogue fries or popcorn that has gotten the better of me all summer. Only managed to eat a mouthful of trail mix though, and then we were too busy to worry about eating. Had a couple of handfuls of popcorn at the end of the shift, but avoided the temptation of an arnold palmer or root beer. I’m a serious stress-eater or frustrated eater, caving in to unhealthy foods every time. Successfully avoided those today, which was no small feat.

Dinner was pork chops with a grilled-peach/ginger chutneyand a piece of bread.

It's not very much.

Got it off eatingwell.com (good site). Tasty, but I should have made a veggie side to go with it. Pretty hungry now. (Can’t lose weight without being hungry, right?) Hanging in there, though. Running in the morning. Fighting the chocolate bar that’s staring at me across the room. Hopefully the sweets ban is still in place by tomorrow.

The Weekly Progress Report #3 — Moving Week

I am finally moved. Which is also why this post is a day later than normal. Still without internet at the new house so I might be running behind all week.

Eating: Not a bad start to the week. Made some pasta with peppers, mushrooms and onions. Also cut the amount of meat that I usually use for pasta (progress!). I took pictures with my phone to include this week, but now my phone won’t connect to my computer. Maybe next week I can get some in. I made a sausage and mushroom pizza the next day, probably with more cheese than is healthy. Then…the accidental vegetarian meal! If you didn’t read about it, you can find the link here. After that, moving took over and it became a eat-everything-that’s-left-so-we-don’t-have-to-move-it kind of situation. Which lent itself to a nice egg, potato, and cheese scrambler. Other than that it was a combination of eating out and (organic) lucky charms mostly. Not a great finish.

Grade: B-

Working Out: Not much to report here again. Trying to clean the side of the fridge was an intense arm/hand workout (yay). Moved/cleaned for about 20 hours straight. Give me a break, it’s close to working out and it’s all I’ve got. Survey says….COUNTS!

Grade: D- (generous I know)

Mitigating Factors:

  1. Moving–Took up most of my free time and created an incentive to eat all the unhealthy food left and eat out.
  2. Moving–Took A LOT of time
  3. Moving–Did I mention that I hate moving

This Week’s Plan!: There’s a lot of unpacking to do still ( :p ), so working out doesn’t look great. But the new place is close to some good running trails, tennis courts, and the dog park. So I’m going to try to run or play tennis and run around with the labradile (part lab, part crocodile–pics soon, I promise!). Eating at this point is mostly an exercise in not eating very much (probably a good thing for me) until everything is unpacked and a grocery run can be made. Got to try for another vegetarian meal. We’ll see how that goes (have to pace myself). Eating/working out plan evaluations to come soon.

“The Meal is Over When I Hate Myself”

I don’t know how many of you have seen Louis CK’s Chewed Up act, but he pretty much sums up my eating style. You can watch it here (from 1:12-2:15), though I should warn you that he is pretty vulgar. In case that bothers you.

That’s pretty much me. Always has been. Seems to run in the family. There is no stopping when I’m full. I know I’m full, but the food looks sooo good (and tastes sooo good). So I keep eating. And I enjoy it, at least til I’m done. I’m the person who finishes everyone else’s meal.

So overeating is a HUGE problem for me. And that’s without even talking about my sweet tooth, which I’ll save for another time. Anyways, it’s something I need to work on. Enjoy the Louis CK (one of my favorites these days).

Weekly Journal #1

First weekly journal keeping track of my progress being healthy!

As far as food goes, not a bad week. Made pasta, a delicious homemade chicken pizza, and bbq chicken. Probably could have eaten more fruit and veggies (this will be a recurring theme). Mostly yogurts for breakfast and small lunches. Ate out twice this week. Panera Bread once, and then Brickhouse BBQ (highly approve!) to celebrate my brother joining me in Madison for school.

Most importantly, barely any overeating! Which is a HUGE victory for me. The only time I ate way to much was at Brickhouse BBQ, which I’m okay with.

Eating grade for the week… B-

-need more fruits and veggies

For working out. Played tennis 1.5 times with the girlfriend. Biked/rock climbed once. Went to Hot Yoga once (I’ll explain someday).

Working out grade… C

-not a great week but an improvement on the usual

Overall weekly grade… C+
